Photographer Melanie Sommer is busy planning her wedding when her fianc has an accident and is left in a coma. Unable to deal with the situation, Melanie escapes to the country to find solace with her Vietnamese great grandmother Hanna. Hanna realizes how much Melanie is suffering and decides to tell her the story of her life: her tragic childhood in Saigon, her great love in Berlin in the 1920s, the hard war years, and her new start in Paris as a hat designer.
